Vinanti Cherian

Doctor

Describe your job in less 50 words:

I’m a Consultant Anaesthetist working in a DGH at NHS. I have over 25 years experience in my chosen field. My day starts at 8 am when I start preoperative assessment for patients scheduled for elective surgery. Operations start at 9 am and some days I finish around 6 pm. In addition I also do emergency out of hours work which could be very unpredictable working hours

What do you like most about your job?

Despite the incredibly busy hours and unpredictable nature of the job, I enjoy my work and am immensely proud to be an Anaesthetist. I go home each day with the feeling of having made a difference to somebody’s life, be that getting a patient safely through a difficult surgery or saving a life in the emergency dept.

What did you want to be when you were at school?

Strangely I always had an attraction for something to do with the medical field although it was veterinary medicine for some time possibly influenced by James Herriot books and TV programmes. Our female family doctor was my role model in later years and I always aspired to have the same calm, collected attitude when dealing with sick patients, especially children.

How could i do your job? I would be able to:

  • Attain good grades in A levels.
  • Medical school
  • Foundation programme
  • Speciality training
